How to DRIVE your OWN car to Langkawi Island

Hi, peeps, starting from 2014 you are now able to drive your own car in Langkawi Island. Previous years, no cars besides Langkawi originated car is allowed on the island, hence, many tourist results to ferry rides, taxi, rental cars and boats as mean of transportation. Now that your own car can be driven on the island, it definitely made the journey to Langkawi Island a lot easier.

I went to Langkawi Island using the car ferry service and let me share with you peeps on how to drive your own car to Langkawi Island. Truthfully it is not that bad of an option because traveling experience can be expensive without your own transportation especially during school holidays where BnB and rental car company will increase their rental rate.

According to my experience, there is only one option for your guys to bring your own car to the island which is to board at Kuala Perlis Port. To be more precise, there are only two ferry services that allow cars to board the ferry which are:

1. Langkawi Auto Express

2. Langkawi RORO Ferry Services Sdn Bhd

From Kuala Lumpur City Centre, the journey to Kuala Perlis Port by car is about 5 hours and 49 minutes. Therefore, it will be best if you could travel early before your departure time as the ferry companies have two hours policy. Meaning that if your car isn't around the port within the two hours before the departure time, they will automatically cancel your trip to Langkawi Island.

Their services may not be the same to each other, hence, thorough search need to be done to ensure you receive the best service from the ferry company. However, from my understanding, the booking fare is pretty much the same for both of the ferry companies. Generally, the average rate for both of the ferry companies are as follows:

One Way Ticket

1. Adult     : RM 18.00 / 4.05 USD

2. Children: RM 13.00 / 2.92 USD

3. Infant    : RM   3.00 / 0.67 USD

4. OKU (Special Need individual) : RM10.00 / 2.25 USD

5. Car below 1500 cc : RM 130.00 / 29.22 USD

Two Way Ticket

1. Adult     : RM 36.00 / 8.10 USD

2. Children: RM 26.00 / 5.84 USD

3. Infant    : RM   6.00 / 1.35 USD

4. OKU (Special Need individual) : RM20.00 / 4.50 USD

5. Car below 1500 cc : RM 250.00 / 56.19 USD

The first step is to go online and book your ticket to Langkawi Island. Click here is you want to book RORO service and click here instead if you prefer to book Langkawi Auto Express instead. From the website, the company will assist you in order to secure booking ticket. All you need is to provide

1. Vehicle Registration Card

2. Consent letter if the car does not belong to you. Must attach together with the Identification Card of the owner.

3. Malaysian Insurance is needed for an overseas car.

Other rules and regulation should abide by the passengers are that:

1. Booking must be made within one month up to 3 days of departure date.

2. Passengers and the car must be at the port 2 hours before the departure time.

3. Passengers and car must be registered at the ferry offices situated at the port before boarding. For your information, the ferry offices is a small container office beside the mosque of the port.

The office will issue custom tickets. For a smooth journey, please keep the ticket by your side at all side. The purpose of the ticket is a reference for the Malaysia customs officers when you board Tanjung Lembong Port Langkawi Island. Once you are at Tanjung Lembong Port Langkawi Island, drive carefully and exit the gate of the port.

No inspection will be done to your car if you entering the island. An inspection will only be done if you exiting the island with your car. Therefore, make you arrive at the port early so that inspection process can be done smoothly and any miss ferry ride is avoidable.

If you follow the rules thoroughly, you will definitely enjoy the service provided by the ferry companies. There should be no hassle at all. Any inquiry can be made directly to the company as their website provided contact numbers for communication and inquiry process.
